While the definition of a garden courtyard is somewhat loose in current usage, we usually think of it as a partially enclosed outdoor room.
In traditional designs, it might be a central garden surrounded by indoor living spaces. Now, walls, hedges or trellises often define the space.
The enclosed nature of a courtyard gives it a sense of privacy and intimacy. Walls also serve as a sound barrier, adding to the peace.
The design usually includes hardscaped surfaces and inviting sitting areas, benches and tables so the space can be enjoyed.
As you’ll see when you watch this video, within these parameters there’s room for lots of creativity. Feel free to pause the video when you see a courtyard you really like. There are several shown here that I would really love to visit.
